Map the dependencies
Identify applications, databases, files, DNS, scheduled jobs and external integrations. Include business owners and the people who will validate the result. A forgotten dependency can matter more than the size of the server.
Prepare the destination
Document the target environment and the access needed to test it. Keep production changes separate from preparation. Use a representative test workload where practical.
Test the route
Run through the transfer, validation and rollback steps before the agreed cutover. Write down what evidence will count as a successful move and who can make the final decision.
Agree the cutover
Set a window, communication plan and criteria for pausing or rolling back. Handle changes to source data deliberately so the destination does not quietly become an incomplete copy.
Close the loop
After the move, confirm access, scheduled jobs, backups and monitoring. Retire the old environment only after dependencies and record retention needs have been checked.
